Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University bowling team opened play in the Hawk Classic Friday, finishing with a record of 3-2 in Woodbridge, Va., at Bowl America Woodbridge. Overall during the 2023-24 season the Dukes own a record of 24-14 (.632).
Duquesne opened Baker play Friday with a 1,238-908 setback to No. 7 Jacksonville State before rebounding in another matchup against ranked foes with a 1,100-1,055 win over No. 19 Central Missouri. Duquesne also posted wins over Adelphi (1,062-855) and No. 10 Louisiana Tech (1,038-1,033) before closing Baker play Friday with a 1,091-1,053 loss to No. 8 Sam Houston State.
The highlight of Friday's action came in the second match of the day against the Mules, as Duquesne rolled its first 300 in Baker competition in program history. The lineup consisted of
Ranelle Ulanday,
Morgan Brookover,
Maribeth Baker,
Shannon Small and
Kiearra Saldi.
The performance also marks just the second perfect game in school history, as the first occurred Jan. 20, 2018, in Reading, Pa., when former Duquesne student-athlete Olivia Farwell (2018-22) posted a 300 against Medaille in traditional play at the Kutztown Invitational. Farwell is currently the head coach at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., which is also competing this weekend at the Hawk Classic.
Jacksonville State opened the first day of action at the Hawk Classic a perfect 5-0 and is the leader in total pins with 5,920, an average of 236.8 per game. The Dukes posted an average score of 206.4 Friday, compiling 5,161 total pins.
Competition resumes Saturday, Nov. 18, at Bowl America Woodbridge with traditional play. Duquesne will square off with three ranked opponents, including #20 Wisconsin-Whitewater in its opener as well as No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Youngstown State.
