PREVIEW: Triathlon at National Championships

PITTSBURGH - The nationally ranked Duquesne University triathlon team is set for the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships on Saturday in Tempe, Arizona.

THE BASICS

Race Breakdown: 750m Swim (1 lap); 20k Bike (3 laps); 5k Run (2 laps)

THE DUKES 

  • Duquesne is ranked 14th in the nation entering the weekend ... DU has been ranked as high as 9th in the country, which was in the first rankings of the season put out on Sept. 25.
  • Robyn Hunt (66), Ainsleigh Cardone (92), Jet Francis (95), and Abby Kreber (100) are all in the top 100 athletes in the NCAA.
  • Robyn Hunt, Ainsleigh Cardone, and Jet Francis all made the A Wave for the National Championship race ... The Dukes team also qualified as a team and will score in the B wave, however all the competing Duquesne athletes will be scored freely among the A and B wave.
  • Duquesne has competed in four races this season ... The Dukes are coming off a seventh place finish at the East National Qualifier, where they were the youngest Division I team competing.
  • Robyn Hunt led the team with a 34th place finish out of 117 athletes ... Hunt turned in a 1:02:02.8 and was top-40 in all three portions of the race with a high of 34th in the run charting a 19:48.2 ... Five Dukes finished consecutively from 51st through 55th ... Ainsleigh Cardone crossed the line in 1:04:21.3 to lead the quintet ... Jet Francis (1:04:38.7) and Kate Potashnik (1:04:47.9) followed, then Abby Kreber (1:05:07.9) and Paige Black (1:05:19.3) rounded out the pack of Dukes.
  • Eight athletes had a sprint distance PR, while DU also posted its highest placing and fastest swim times of the season ... Hunt and Kate Potashnik each were under 20 minutes in the run porion for the two fastest times of the season.
  • DU took runner-up at its first-ever race over Labor Day weekend in Greensboro, NC and took 4th place in its first-ever home race on September 9 at Brady's Run Park in Beaver County, PA.

UP NEXT 

  • The Dukes will flip the calendar to 2024 and be back in action for its final race of the inaugural season in early March at the Clermont Draft Legal Challenge in Florida.
