Pittsburgh, Pa. – Freshman
Maribeth Baker of the Duquesne University bowling team garnered her second Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week accolade Wednesday.
At the Sunshine State Classic in Orlando, Fla., at AMF Sky Lanes, Baker helped the Dukes finish with a record of 8-5 (.615) and place sixth out of 18 teams. In traditional play over five matches, Baker, a native of York, Pa., tallied 988 pins and an average of 197.60. Her best game came in match two, a 1,069-939 victory over No. 22 Tulane (10/28/23), when she finished with a 237.
Through two events of the 2023-24 season, Baker has completed 270 frames and is recording an average of 19.84 per frame, including a 9.00 average on her first ball. Baker recorded averages of 9.06 on her first ball in Baker play at the Sunshine State Classic as well as an average of 9.04 in traditional play. She has also recorded a 51.8 percent (141-for-272) strike percentage to open her career.
In addition to being selected as the
NEC Rookie of the Week for the second time, Baker was one of three Duquesne student-athletes to earn NEC Prime Performer status. She was joined by graduate student
Kiearra Saldi and senior
Shannon Small.
Saldi posted a 245 in traditional play in a 1,072-881 win over Monmouth (10/28/23) and overall finished 11th at the Sunshine State Classic with an average score of 215.40. Small, meanwhile, finished eighth thanks to an average of 218.00, including a 257 in the win over the Green Wave.
The Dukes, led by head coach
Jody Fetterhoff, return to action with the first of three NEC competitions. Duquesne heads to North Brunswick, N.J., to compete at Bowlero North Brunswick Saturday, Nov. 11, and Sunday, Nov. 12. The Dukes enter the tournament with an overall record of 17-9 (.654).
