Pittsburgh, Pa. – Freshman
Maribeth Baker of the Duquesne University bowling team was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week it was announced Wednesday.
In helping the Dukes claim
fourth at the 2023 Penguin Classic in Struthers, Ohio, at Holiday Bowl to open the 2023-24 season, Baker finished sixth individually. She posted an average of 20.16 in 141 games, including an average of 8.96 on her first ball. Baker converted 50 percent of her attempts for strikes (71-of-142) as well as 74.6 percent (53-for-71) of her spare attempts in her NCAA Division I debut.
Duquesne finished with an overall record of 9-4 (.692) at the Penguin Classic, including wins over No. 3 Nebraska and No. 19 Central Missouri on the final day of competition in Baker play. In 71 games, the Dukes racked up 13,575 total pins in producing an average score of 191.2.
In addition to Baker being named NEC Rookie of the Week, she joined graduate student
Kiearra Saldi and senior
Brenna Gleim in being selected as an NEC Prime Performer. Saldi averaged 19.77 in 133 frames at the Penguin Classic, while Gleim, who finished 20th individually, averaged 19.02 in 104 frames.
Led by head coach
Jody Fetterhoff, Duquesne, which was ranked 11th in the 2023-24 National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Preseason Top 25, returns to action with the Sunshine State Classic in Orlando, Fla., Friday, Oct. 27, through Sunday, Oct. 29, at AMF Sky Lanes.
