Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University bowling team wrapped up play in the 2023 Penguin Classic Sunday at Holiday Bowl in Struthers, Ohio, finishing fourth. The Dukes earned three victories in Baker play before falling to No. 3 Nebraska, 4-2, in a match for third place.
Duquesne, which
opened the season ranked No. 11 in the 2023-24 National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top 25 poll, concludes its first competition of the season with a record of 9-4 (.692).
In Baker play Sunday, the Dukes opened action with a 923-914 triumph over No. 19 Central Missouri before handing the Cornhuskers a 963-944 defeat. Duquesne wrapped up Baker play with a 1,101-1,017 win over Niagara. The three wins set up a rematch with Nebraska in tournament action, which saw the Cornhuskers post a 4-2 victory over the Dukes.
Arkansas State claimed the 2023 Penguin Classic with an overall record of 10-3 (.759), including a 4-0 sweep of Youngstown State in the championship match. The Red Wolves finished with 13,991 total pins in 69 games, an average game of 202.8, with the Penguins finishing second with a 9-4 (.692) record and 13,888 pins. Duquesne finished with an average score of 191.2 in 71 games, collecting 13,575 pins overall, including 12,440 in qualifying action.
Earning victories against the Cornhuskers Sunday in tournament play was graduate student
Kiearra Saldi and senior
Brenna Gleim. Saldi concluded the Penguin Classic with an average score of 194.25 in four games, while Gleim finished 20th individually at 194.20 in five games. Pacing the Dukes overall during the Penguin Classic was freshman
Maribeth Baker, who knocked down 1,033 total pins in recording an average of 206.60.
Next up for Duquesne is the Sunshine State Classic, which will be held in Orlando, Fla., Friday, Oct. 27, through Saturday, Oct. 29, at AMF Sky Lanes.
