Duquesne Sweeps Atlantic 10 Weekly Honors

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Bolstered by winning the A-10 Classic last weekend in Fairfax, Va., the Duquesne University swimming & diving team swept the Atlantic 10 weekly awards Tuesday. Junior Haley Scholer was named A-10 Performer of the Week, while freshman Lexi Sundgren garnered her second A-10 Rookie of the Week accolade.

Scholer picked up a trio of individual championships at the A-10 Classic over the course of three sessions, including the 200-yard intermediate as well as the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. In the 200-yard IM to open action in the first day of competition Friday, Scholer touched the wall at 2:07.16.

The next morning, Scholer won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.04 seconds. She completed the triumvirate of titles in the afternoon session Saturday by closing at 2:03.28 to finish first in the 200-yard backstroke.

Sundgren picks up her second A-10 Rookie of the Week honor, as she was also bestowed the plaudit Oct. 18, 2023, in her NCAA Division I debut. At the A-10 Classic, Sundgren tied for first in the 500-yard freestyle with teammate Orla Egan with a time of 5:05.60 before winning gold in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:53.63.

Both Scholer and Sundgren were also part of Duquesne's 200-yard medley relay team that placed second with a time of 1:46.48 as well as the 400-yard medley relay that claimed silver at 3:53.62. Scholer swam the opening leg of each relay, with Sundgren serving as the anchor for both.

The performances by Scholer and Sundgren helped the Dukes earn a 214-138 win over La Salle and a 188-164 triumph over George Mason to win the A-10 Classic championship.

Duquesne, led by head coach David Sheets, returns to action with the Fall Frenzy in Charlotte, N.C., which is hosted by Queens University. The three-day event takes place Friday, Nov. 17, through Sunday, Nov. 19. The Duquesne diving team will head to Morgantown, W.Va., the same three days to compete in the WVU Diving Invite.
