Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University bowling team opened play in the Sunshine State Classic Friday in Orlando, Fla., at AMF Sky Lanes, posting a record of 3-2 (.600) in Baker play. The Dukes own an overall record of 12-6 (.667) after the first day of competition in an event hosted by Sacred Heart.
Duquesne opened play Friday with three consecutive victories, including a pair against ranked teams. The Dukes earned a 1,067-1,018 triumph over No. 6 Youngstown State before posting a 982-847 win over No. 23 Delaware State. In its third Baker match of the day, the Dukes defeated UAB, 981-937. Emmanuel University followed by snapping the winning streak for Duquesne, 1,045-988, before the Dukes closed out play by falling to No. 2 Arkansas State, 977-945.
Knocking down a total of 4,963 pins on the first day of competition at the Sunshine State Classic, Duquesne recorded an average of 198.5 per game. The lineup for the Dukes included

Jacksonville State opened play Friday with a total of 5,400 total pins to pace the field. Stephen F. Austin and Arkansas State each finished 5-0, with the Lumberjacks finishing second (5,194) in total pins (5,194) and Arkansas State fourth (4,996). Vanderbilt, the preseason No. 1, finished just 20 pins ahead of the Dukes.
Traditional play of the Sunshine State Classic is set for Saturday, Oct. 28, with Duquesne opening against Alabama A&M. The Dukes will also face No. 22 Tulane before taking on No. 5 Stephen F. Austin. Daeman and Monmouth concludes traditional play Saturday.
