Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University bowling team continued play at the 2023 Penguin Classic Saturday in Struthers, Ohio, finishing 3-2 in traditional play at Holiday Bowl. Through the first two days of competition the Dukes have posted an overall record of 6-3 (.667).
In the opener Saturday, Duquesne earned a 967-783 victory over Wright State and also posted wins over Arkansas State (1,103-1,019) and No. 25 Morgan State (975-866). Valparaiso finished with an 892-836 win over the Dukes in their second traditional match Saturday, while No. 6 Youngstown State garnered a 995-990 win over Duquesne.
In her NCAA Division I debut, freshman
Maribeth Baker ranked sixth individually, having notched a scoring average of 206.60 while knocking down 1,033 total pins. Kirsten Moore of YSU concluded action atop the individual standings with 1,099 pins, an average of 219.80.
Arkansas State and Youngstown State, with each having posted records of 7-2 (.778) through the first two days of the Penguin Classic, sit just a pin apart. The Red Wolves owns 10,103 pins compared to 10,102 for the Penguins. Duquesne sits sixth with 9,453 pins and an average score of 189.1.
Baker was one of two Dukes to play all five matches Saturday, as she was joined by senior
Brenna Gleim, who owns 971 total pins, including a 268 in the victory over Wright State. Individually Gleim finished 20th with an average of 194.20.
Duquesne returns to Holiday Bowl Sunday, Oct. 15, to conclude its 2023-24 season-opening tournament. The Dukes will face No. 19 Central Missouri to open the action and will also square off with No. 3 Nebraska and Niagara. Each of the three matches are Baker pinfall.
