DEPTFORD, NJ – Competing in a field that featured 14 of the top 15 ranked teams in the nation - as well as 22 of the 25 teams in the current National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25, the #12 Duquesne Dukes placed 10th at the Northeast Classic held at Bowlero Deptford in Deptford, N.J. over the weekend.
The field of 33 teams was the second largest tournament for NCAA bowling teams since the first year of the bowling championships in 2004.
Ranelle Ulanday placed 20th in the individual standings with a five-game average of 207.8.
Kiearra Saldi was 25th (205.8),
Brenna Gleim was 38th (201.8) and
Shannon Small placed 42nd (199.6).
The fivesome of Ulanday, Gleim,
Morgan Brookover, Small and Saldi got the Dukes off to a 4-1 start in Friday's baker round. The Dukes topped the 1,000 pin mark twice in wins over New Jersey City (1031-774) and #20 Central Missouri (1006-932). DU also defeated #23 Wisconsin-Whitewater, with the lone setback coming to #3 Vanderbilt (956-1079).
Duquesne was ninth of the field of 33 with a total pinfall of 4,935 (197.4) through Friday.
Day two saw the Dukes face three Top 10 teams in the traditional round.
DU opened with a 979-924 win over #17 Tulane, before putting up big numbers in tight losses to #8 Sam Houston (1059-1075) and #4 Nebraska (1059-1075). Gleim rolled a career-best 244 in the SHSU match, while Ulanday paced the Dukes vs. Nebraska with a team weekend-high 247.
The Dukes rallied to defeat #6 Arkansas State behind a 244 from Small, before falling to #19 Medaille (782-908) in the afternoon's final match.
DU was seeded ninth with a 9,895 pin total entering Sunday's Championship Round.
The Dukes opened the Championship Round with a 4-1 win over 10th seed Sam Houston before falling to No. 2 North Carolina A&T, the eighth seed, and 11th-seed Central Missouri in seven-game matches.
Duquesne (42-22) will be back in action next weekend (Jan. 27-29) at the Red Flash Shootout at Altoona, Pa.'s Holiday Bowl.
