PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's tennis team traveled down Forbes Avenue to compete in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Friday and Saturday.

In addition to Duquesne, the event features student athletes from Carnegie Mellon, Slippery Rock and Saint Francis U. The Dukes went 15-6 in singles competition and posted a mark of 5-5 in doubles matches. There was not a format for the event, as each team played standalone matches against each other.

The big winner for Duquesne was
Ana Utrilla Benito, who won all three of her singles matches and went 2-1 in doubles play. Utrilla earned straight-set wins over Carnegie Mellon's Abigail Khieu (6-4, 6-0) and Zoe Angell (6-3, 7-5). She also earned an 8-2 victory over Saint Francis's Valeria Vinces.

In doubles play, Utrilla paired with
Priyanka Mitta to knock off Carnegie Mellon's Simran Bedi and Ola Wojciak (8-4). She also teamed up with Blanca Benet García to defeat Slippery Rock's team of Nuria Martin Lopez and Georgie Lancaster.

Ellen Shanahan also had an impressive outing, winning all three of her singles matches. She defeated Sarah Yang of Carnegie Mellon (7-6 [9-7], 6-2); knocked off Slippery Rock's Nuria Martin Lopez in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) and collected a victory over Lindy Cornwall of Carnegie Mellon (8-3).

Four other Dukes earned multiple wins in singles play, including: Mitta, Benet García,
Meredith Lee, and
Daniela Latoni.

The women's tennis team will travel to Annapolis, Maryland on October 1 for the four-day ITA Atlantic Regional hosted by the U.S. Navel Academy.
