SOMERSET, N.J. - For the second consecutive season, Duquesne defensive back
Spencer DeMedal (New Wilmington, Pa. / Wilmington, Area) has been named the Northeast Conference's (NEC) Fall Scholar-Athlete for the sport of football, conference officials announced on Tuesday afternoon. In addition, 40 Dukes were recognized on the NEC Commissioner's and Academic Honor Rolls for their standout work in the classroom.
Recently garnering his third-straight CoSIDA Academic All-District® award, DeMedal is now a two-time NEC Fall Scholar-Athlete as well as a two-time STATS FCS Doris Robinson Award nominee for the conference. The three-year starter at defensive back for Duquesne compiled a 3.97 cumulative grade point average as a biology major on The Bluff.
DeMedal earned First Team All-NEC honors this past season, pacing the league in interceptions while ranking second in forced fumbles as well as third in tackles , tackles for loss and passes defended. The New Wilmington, Pa. native has appeared in all 40 games of his career with the Dukes, recording 161 career tackles with nine tackles for loss, a sack, four interceptions and 14 pass breakups.
The NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who have posted a at least a 3.75 cumulative GPA, while the NEC Academic Honor Roll highlights student-athletes who have registered a 3.2 cumulative GPA or better.
