Preview: @DuqWBB vs. Fordham

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's basketball team will honor three seniors and close out the regular-season home slate against Fordham on Tuesday night at Robert Morris' UPMC Events Center. The opening tip between the Dukes (17-10, 7-7) and Rams (18-9, 10-4) is set for 7:00 p.m. in Moon Township. Senior night festivities will begin approximately at 6:50 p.m.

THE SERIES

  • Overall the Dukes lead the all-time series by a mark of 21-9, but the Rams have won four consecutive meetings, including a 76-34 win in the semifinal round of the A-10 tournament a season ago at the Palumbo Center.
  • Duquesne's last win over Fordham came in the 2015-16 season, when the Dukes downed the Rams 70-65 in the first round of the A-10 tournament. Duquesne went on to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and winning its first-ever NCAA tournament game over Seton Hall, before bowing out to eventual undefeated national champion UConn.  

LAST TIME OUT

Leading by two points entering the fourth quarter, the Duquesne women's basketball was outscored 25-16 in the fourth quarter, falling to George Washington, 72-65, on Saturday night at La Roche University's Kerr Fitness Center.

Laia Solé led three double-figure scorers with 15 points (6-9 FG , 3-4 FT), while Nina Aho poured in 14 points (5-7 FG, 2-3 3PT, 2-2 FT) and Libby Bazelak posted 10. Amanda Kalin and Amaya Hamilton each recorded eight points on the night. Paige Cannon led the charge off the boards with a game-high eight rebounds.

SENIOR NIGHT

Over the past five seasons, this class has combined for 106 victories, three postseason season appearances – including the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2015-16 – and the program's first-ever Atlantic 10 regular season championship.   • Aho appeared in 63 games and started in 42 games during her Duquesne career. Battling injuries throughout her tenure on the Bluff, Aho has put together her best season of her career in 2019-20, averaging 7.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. This season, she ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 this season with a 2.0 assist to turnover ratio. This May, Aho will earn a bachelor's degree as a double major in international relations and international security systems. She plans on playing professionally after graduation.
  • Cannon posted a career-best 21 points in her home Buckeye State against Akron on Dec. 4th. This season, she is averaging a career-best 8.8 points per game. She recorded six double-doubles in her career as a Duke to date. STAT CHECK

  • Libby Bazelak, one of the country's most efficient long range shooters, ranks fourth nationally with a 46.2 3-point field goal percentage.
  • The charity-stripe has been a major strength over the past four games for the Dukes, combining to shoot 63-76 (82.9%) against Richmond (15-18), Davidson (21-26) Rhode Island (14-17) and George Washington (13-15). Bazelak (14-16 FT), Laia Sole (15-20), Amaya Hamilton (9-11), Amanda Kalin (8-11) and Paige Cannon (8-8) have led the way. 
  • The Dukes offense continues to be the best in the Atlantic 10 in scoring, averaging 69.3 points per game. Duquesne's 42 percent field goal percentage, 35.3 clip from 3-point land and 15.5 assists per game leads the conference, as well.
  • Over its last 10 games, Duquesne has buckled down defensively, allowing just 60.4 points per game in the span. The Dukes have forced opponents to shoot 38.8 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from 3-point range since Jan. 18. Duquesne has went 6-4 in those games, outscoring the opponents by an average margin of 5.5 points per game. In its last four losses, the Dukes have fell by a combined 16 points.
  • Despite not having an on-campus arena this season, the Dukes are now 9-3 at 'home' sites which include La Roche University (7-2), PPG Paints Arena (1-1) and Oakland Catholic High School (1-0). The Dukes have outscored its opponents by an average margin of 10.3 points per game at home. The Dukes are shooting at a .455 clip at home, and have limited the opposition to shoot just .390 from the field and .287 from long range.
  • In the Dukes' 10 losses this season, six have come by five points or less. Only Temple, Oklahoma State,  Dayton and George Washington have defeated the Dukes by more than five points this season.

A LOOK AT THE STANDINGS

  • Duquesne is tied for fifth in the A-10 standings, but would earn the eighth seed if the tournament were to start to date, with UMass and Davidson and Richmond holding the tie-breaker over the Dukes. With wins over Fordham and St. Bonaventure, the Dukes would secure a home game in the Atlantic 10 Championship First round at La Roche University's Kerr Fitness Center on March 3.

SCOUTING FORDHAM

  • The Rams have won six of their last seven, including handing Dayton its first conference loss by a score of 50-38 in the Bronx on Saturday.
  • Fordham has defended Rose Hill Gym well with a 12-2 home record, but have struggled on the road with an overall record of 5-6 including a 3-4 record against A-10 competition.
  • Bre Cavanaugh leads the Rams and the A-10 with 18.9 points per game, which ranks 25th nationally.
  • The Rams lead the Atlantic 10 in scoring defense (55.4 ppg allowed), fewest turnovers per game (11.9), and free throw percentage (79.3 percent)
