PITTSBURGH -
Frankie Hughes' 3-point attempt from the right wing was off the mark as the final horn sounded, enabling St. Bonaventure to escape with a 51-49 win over Duquesne at the Palumbo Center.
The Bonnies, who won despite being held to 28.6 percent from the floor, got a game-high 16 points from Kyle Lofton and a Palumbo Center record 22 rebounds and six blocks from Osun Osunniyi.
Frankie Hughes and
Sincere Carry had 11 and 10 points respectively for the Dukes who were held to their lowest point total under second-year head coach
Keith Dambrot.
Eric Williams Jr. led DU with 10 rebounds and
Marcus Weathers and
Michael Hughes had three blocks each for Duquesne.
Duquesne which trailed 18-7 early, cut the SBU lead to 18-13 when
Frankie Hughes hit a 3-pointer and followed with a steal and layup.
Duquesne took a 22-21 lead on a Carry layup, before SBU's Courtney Stockard answered to give the Bonnies a 23-22 lead at the half.
The game was tied 27-27 when the Bonnies put together a 13-2 run - keyed by eight points from Lofton - to take a 39-31 lead.
With Lofton on the bench with four fouls, the Dukes pulled to within three on a
Frankie Hughes layup at the 5:35 mark.
Carry made it 48-47 on a 3-pointer from the deep corner with 4:24 to go.
With the Bonnies up 50-49, Lofton drove the lane and missed a contested layup. Duquesne rebounded and Weathers had a layup rim out with 46 seconds left.
Lofton drove the lane again and dropped a pass to La Darien Griffin who was fouled. The Bonnies, who were not in the bonus, inbounded and were fouled again, this time with 23.7 seconds left.
SBU inbounded again, this time to Osunnyi, who was immediately fouled and missed the front end of a one-and-one.
Carry had a driving reverse layup blocked by Griffin. Dominick Welch came up with the ball and was fouled with 6.2 seconds left.
Welch made the first and missed the second setting up the final possession.
Duquesne, which shot 34.5 percent, turned it over 17 times. St. Bonaventure, which went 2-of-17 from 3-point, outrebounded the Dukes 54-42.
Duquesne heads to the Bronx, N.Y. for the first of back-to-back road games when it takes on Fordham at 2:00 Saturday, Feb. 9 (ESPN+). The Dukes will return home before heading to Philadelphia to face La Salle on Wednesday, Feb. 13 (ESPN+).

- St. Bonaventure's .286 field goal percentage was the lowest by a Duquesne opponent since George Mason shot .258 (16-62) in a 62-53 loss to Duquesne on Jan. 31, 2015.
- The Dukes held SBU leading scorer Courtney Stockard (17.2 ppg.) to four points on 2-of-16 shooting.
- Frankie Hughes finished with a career-high nine rebounds for Duquesne.
- Duquesne's 49 points were its fewest since a 68-49 loss at No. 15 (AP) Butler on Feb. 19, 2013.
- DU's 6-of-16 performance from the foul line (.375) was its worst under head coach Keith Dambrot.
