FAIRFAX, VA. -
Tavian Dunn-Martin, starting in place of injured point guard
Sincere Carry, scored a career-high 22 points as Duquesne roared back from a 19-point deficit to defeat George Mason, 79-78, at EagleBank Arena.
It was the seventh time this season, and fourth time in Atlantic 10 play, that the Dukes have rallied from a double-digit deficit to win.
Frankie Hughes added 15 points - all on 3-pointers,
Marcus Weathers posted a 14-11 double-double and
Michael Hughes added 11 for the Dukes, who tied the school record for Atlantic 10 road wins (now 4-3) in dramatic fashion.
DU was down 78-75 when
Frankie Hughes drilled a deep 3-pointer to tie it with 1:33 left.
The Dukes got a stop and
Michael Hughes was fouled and made one-of-two free throws with 58 seconds remaining.
Michael Hughes then rebounded an Otis Livingston miss and had a contested layup roll off the rim with 14 seconds to go.
Justin Kier rebounded the miss and had a lane to the rim, but
Frankie Hughes hustled back to block Kier's layup attempt.
Mason retained possession, but Dunn-Martin was able to deflect the ball out of bounds with 5.3 seconds left, setting up the Patriots' final possession.
Mason got the ball to Jarred Reuter at the foul line extended. Reuter took two dribbles to his left and got of a shot - contested by
Michael Hughes - that bounced off the rim as time expired.
The Dukes, with Carry, the team leader in assist and steals as well as team leader in conference scoring at 13.7 ppg., watching from the bench in street clothes (knee), hit just two of their first 11 shots in falling behind 19-4.
The Patriots increased the lead to 33-14, before DU - which missed its first eight 3-point attempts - found its range with Dunn-Martin hitting one, and
Frankie Hughes burying two, from distance to make it a 10-point game.
A late 3-pointer from Dunn-Martin trimmed the deficit to 42-34 at the half.
DU, which shot 53 percent in the second half, made it 54-53 on a
Lamar Norman Jr. layup with 11:41 to go.
The Dukes got back-to-back 3-pointers from
Frankie Hughes, followed by a Weathers layup to take their first lead at 71-70 with 4:53 left.
There were two ties and four lead changes before
Michael Hughes gave the Dukes the lead for good on his free throw at the 58 second mark.
Duquesne, which had 11 turnovers at the half, finished with 14. Dunn-Martin (4-of-7) and
Frankie Hughes (5-of-11) combined for nine of DU's 10 3-pointers (10-of-31).
Duquesne closes out the month of February at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. (ESPN+).
