Dukes Defeat Colonials

Frankie Hughes hits seven 3-pointers in 85-69 win

PITTSBURGH - Frankie Hughes scored a season-high 21 points - all on 3-pointers - and Eric Williams Jr. tied his season high with 22 points, to help Duquesne to a 85-69 win over George Washington at the Palumbo Center.

Sincere Carry had 15 points and six assists and Marcus Weathers added 12 points for Duquesne (17-9, 8-5), which eclipsed both its overall and conference win totals from last season (16-16, 7-11) and clinched a winning record for the season.

The victory also gave the Dukes, who defeated the Colonials, 91-85 in overtime in Washington D.C. on Jan. 20, a sweep of the regular-season series.

Duquesne jumped out to an early 13-2 lead, only to see the Colonials (7-18, 3-7), who made four of their first five 3-point attempts, rally to take a 21-20 lead.

Frankie Hughes then caught fire, hitting five 3-pointers in a 3:44 span to give the Dukes a 43-37 lead. Lamar Norman Jr. added a 3-pointer late to give Duquesne a 47-41 halftime lead.

GW scored the first five points out of the break to pull within one, but couldn't completely close the gap.

The Dukes built their lead to seven five times before Weathers made it 72-64 on a free throw with just over seven minutes left.

Duquesne took its first double-digit lead at 75-64 on Frankie Hughes' seventh 3-pointer at the 5:28 mark.

Michael Hughes, who led DU with nine rebounds, recorded three of his four blocks in the final 4:36 to help the Dukes preserve their double-digit lead.

Frankie Hughes finished 7-of-15 from 3-point for the Dukes who went 12-of-35 from the arc and shot 43.1 percent overall.

GW, which finished at 50 percent, ended up 9-of-20 from 3-point.

Duquesne, which finished with a Dambrot Era low six turnovers, forced 17 GW miscues in outscoring the Colonials 25-6 off turnovers.

Duquesne is idle before heading to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4:00 p.m. (MASN/ESPN+).

NOTES
  • With the victory, DU (17-9, 8-5) has eclipsed last year's overall and Atlantic 10 win totals (16-16, 7-11). Duquesne has also clinched a ninth overall winning season since joining the A-10 in 1976-77.
  • DU's eight Atlantic 10 wins are its most through 13 conference games since 2010-11 (9-4). This is just the eighth time a Duquesne team has posted eight or more A-10 wins. The Dukes have five conference games remaining.
  • Duquesne has tied the Palumbo Center record for wins (13) set last year. The 13 victories in each of the past two seasons (13-6 last year and 13-4 this year) are the most at home since 1981 (14-2). The Dukes have two home games remaining.
  • This was Duquesne's first conference game decided by more than eight points.
  • It was the team-high sixth 20-point game of the season for Eric Williams Jr. The 22 points tied his season high set vs. UMass Lowell and tied vs. Longwood. It was his second 20-point game in conference play.
  • Frankie Hughes finished with a career-high seven 3-pointers, including five in a 3:44 span of the first half. Hughes had hit five in a game four times (twice at Missouri and twice this season). His seven 3's were the most by a Duke since Eric Williams Jr. hit a school record 9 (9-of-15) in a double overtime win over George Mason last year. Hughes is the 12th Duquesne player to hit seven or more 3-pointers in a game.
  • Duquesne's six turnovers were the fewest by a Keith Dambrot-coached Duquesne team. The previous low was seven, accomplished three times last year.
  • There was one tie and six lead changes … George Washington's largest lead was two at 33-31 with 6:51 left in the first half …Duquesne's largest lead was 18 at 85-67 with three seconds left … Duquesne took the lead for good on Frankie Hughes' 3-pointer that made it 34-33 with 6:50 left in the first half ... George Washington led for 0:57 … Duquesne led for 38:11 … the game was tied for 0:52.
