PITTSBURGH - Duquesne defensive backs
Spencer DeMedal (New Wilmington, Pa. / Wilmington Area) and
Mason Williams (Pasadena, Calif. / St. Francis / Duke) each garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District® honors, the organization announced on Thursday.
The 2019 Academic All-District® Football Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
DeMedal and Williams were named to the District 2 Team which encompasses schools from Pennsylvania along with Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
This is DeMedal's second consecutive Academic All-District® honor. The junior - who has compiled a 3.98 cumulative grade point average in biology - ranks second on the team with 50 tackles (32 solo) on the year with 4.0 tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and a pair of pass breakups.
He is a two-time Northeast Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and NEC Academic Honor roll selection. Helping the Dukes win a conference title and FCS Playoff game in 2018, he finished second on the team with 61 tackles (44 solo) to go with seven passes defended (one interception, six pass breakups).
Williams, in his first season with the Dukes as a graduate transfer, posted a 3.53 cumulative undergraduate grade point average at Duke and Penn as a political science major.
The Pasadena, Calif. native has 28 tackles (18 solo) with 2.5 tackles for loss and the game-sealing interception in Duquesne's win over Wagner. An All-Ivy League performer at Penn in 2016, he paced the Ivy League in interceptions that season for the Quakers. While at Duke, Williams earned Academic All-ACC honors.
Both DeMedal and Williams will now be included on the national Academic All-America ballot which will be voted on by the College Sports Information Director's of America, with the Academic All-America® Team to be announced on Dec. 9.
