RICHMOND, VA. -
Sincere Carry scored 21 points and
Frankie Hughes added 15 - on a career high-tying five 3-pointers - to lead Duquesne to its first win at Richmond since 1993, by a 74-68 score at Robins Center.
The win was the third in a row for Duquesne (12-5, 3-1), which moved to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
Marcus Weathers added 12 points for the Dukes, who posted just their second win in 24 games against the Spiders (7-10, 1-3) since UR joined the Atlantic 10 in 2001-02.
Duquesne went on a 9-0 run to take its first lead since 4-2 on back-to-back 3-pointers by
Brandon Wade and Carry that made it 48-47 with 11:32 left.
There were three ties and 10 lead changes before Carry banked in a jumper to put the Dukes up 67-65 with 1:29 left.
Frankie Hughes then banked in a 3-pointer, his fourth of the half, to make it 70-65.
UR cut it to two on a pair of Jacob Gilyard free throws with 28 seconds left.
The Dukes hit four free throws down the stretch, two by
Tavian Dunn-Martin and two by Weathers for the final margin.
There were five ties and one lead change in a first half that ended with Richmond up 32-28. Neither team led by more than six in the opening 20 minutes.
Duquesne, which went 2-of-13 from the arc in the first half, rallied to make 8-of-16 from distance in the second half to finish 10-of-29.
Carry, who added a game-high six assists, scored 15 in the second half.
Frankie Hughes had 12 of his 15 in the second 20 minutes.
Michael Hughes had six points, nine rebounds and a career-best four blocks for DU.
Duquesne travels to Washington D.C. to take on George Washington on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 4:00 p.m. (NBCSN).
NOTES
- The win snapped Duquesne's 10-game losing streak at Richmond. DU's last win at UR was on Dec. 20, 1993 (67-60 in OT). The victory also ended an eight-game series losing streak.
- Frankie Hughes' five 3-pointers tied his career high he reached twice while a freshman at Missouri. His 15 points were a Duquesne high.
- Michael Hughes' four blocks broke his previous career high of three set in the season opener vs. William & Mary.
- Brandon Wade came off the bench to contribute a season high-tying five points in 11 minutes.
- There were eight ties and 12 lead changes … Richmond's largest lead was eight, the last of which came at 36-28 with 18:14 left …Duquesne's largest lead was the final six-point margin … Duquesne took the lead for good on a Sincere Carry bucket with 1:29 to go ...
