Dukes Work Overtime to Defeat George Washington

Michael Hughes' career afternoon leads DU to fourth-straight victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Michael Hughes set career highs for points (21), rebounds (14) and blocks (7) in leading Duquesne to a 91-85 overtime win at George Washington (6-12, 2-3).

Hughes, who sent the game to overtime on a basket with five seconds left in regulation, blocked four shots in the extra period as Duquesne (13-5, 4-1) extended its win streak to four in moving into a three-way tie for third in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Sincere Carry finished with 19 points, six rebounds and eight assists for the Dukes who have now posted back-to-back wins at GW for the first time since 1989 & 1990.

Eric Williams finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, Marcus Weathers scored 14 points and Frankie Hughes added 10 points and a career high six assists for Duquesne which posted a season-high 22 assists on 32 field goals.

Duquesne, which led for 41:37 of the game, saw GW rally from an 18-point first half deficit to take its first lead at 74-71 on a Maceo Jack 3-pointer with 1:37 left in regulation.

The Colonials led by five with under one minute left before Carry hit a pair of free throws and Michael Hughes scored in the paint to make it a one-point game with 33 seconds remaining. GW's Terry Nolan Jr. hit one of two free throws to set up Michael Hughes' game-tying bucket off a pass from Tavian Dunn-Martin.

Carry opened the overtime with a jumper and Frankie Hughes and Williams Jr. followed with 3-pointers to give the Dukes an 85-77 lead.

GW, which went 3-of-14 in overtime, managed to make it a three-point game with 39 seconds left, but the Dukes converted 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Michael Hughes scored 11 of his 13 first-half points early to help the Dukes jump out to a 24-6 lead. GW got 17 points from Javier Langarcia - who came into the game averaging 4.4 ppg. - to cut the lead to 45-39 at the half.

Duquesne, which made three of its six shots in overtime, finished at 47.8 percent. George Washington ended up shooting 42.7 percent.

Duquesne hosts Atlantic 10 leader Saint Louis (14-4, 5-0) on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 8:00 p.m. (AT&T SportsNet). The URI game begins a stretch of three in a row at home for the Dukes who are 10-2 at home - including a 10-1 mark in games at Palumbo Center - this season.

NOTES
  • This is the first time since 1989 & 1990 that the Dukes have won back-to-back games at George Washington. The Dukes defeated the Colonials 75-73 last season at Smith Center. DU has now won three in a row in the series for the first time since 2008-11, when the Dukes won four straight.
  • With the win, DU matched its road win total from last season (2-7). The Dukes are 2-2 on the road this year.
  • This is the first time since 2010-11 that Duquesne has won four consecutive conference games (the 2011 team opened 8-0 on the way to a 10-6 conference record).
  • Michael Hughes had a career-high hat trick with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocks. His previous highs were 20 points vs. Pitt and Marshall, 10 rebounds vs. Pitt and 4 blocks at Richmond. This was Hughes' second career double-double.
  • Frankie Hughes, who scored five of his 10 points in overtime, finished with a career-best six assists. He previous career high was four earlier this season vs. Eastern Kentucky.
  • Marcus Weathers extended his double-digit scoring streak to five games with 15 points.
  • Sincere Carry (8), Frankie Hughes (6) and Tavian Dunn-Martin (4) combined for 18 of DU's 22 assists. The trio finished with four turnovers among them.
  • There were three ties and two lead changes … George Washington's largest lead was five at 76-71 with 58 seconds left in regulation …Duquesne's largest lead was 18 at 24-6 with 12:23 left in the first half … Duquesne took the lead for good on a Sincere Carry jumper with 4:43 to go in overtime ... GW led for 1:32 … Duquesne led for 41:37 … the game was tied for 1:51.
