Preview: @DuqFB Heads West to Face Hawaii

OPENING KICKOFF

  • The Dukes wrap up non-conference play making the long 4,656-mile journey west to face Hawaii on Saturday evening at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.
  • Duquesne has won three straight games following a 31-26 victory over Dayton at Rooney Field last Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors opened the season with three victories in a row before falling to Army last week by a score of 28-21.
  • The Dukes' matchup with Hawaii is DU's third game against an FBS opponent. Duquesne faced Buffalo in 2014 and UMass to open the 2018 season.
  • The game will be the Dukes' first west of the Rocky Mountains since 1947 when Duquesne traveled to face San Francisco. Since moving to the FCS level for the 1993 season, the furthest Duquesne has traveled is to Thibodaux, Louisiana to face Nicholls State in 2009 (955 miles).
  • Wide receiver Nehari Crawford and linebacker Brett Zanotto each earned NEC Player of the Week honors for their performances against Dayton. Crawford had 11 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns while Zanotto finished with 10 tackles (9 solo), 2 TFL and a pass breakup in the win.

  • The matchup with Hawaii is followed by a bye week before the Dukes begin Northeast Conference play against Bryant on Oct. 6 at Rooney Field.
  • Duquesne has won three straight games following a 31-26 victory over Dayton last Saturday at Rooney Field. The Dukes improved to 26-3 in home non-conference games under 14th-year head coach Jerry Schmitt.
  • Nehari Crawford (offensive) and Brett Zanotto (defensive) were both named NEC Players of the Week for their efforts in the win over Dayton.   • Duquesne returns 11 starters from last year's team which posted a 7-4 overall mark and a 4-2 ledger in Northeast Conference play.
  • The Dukes put together a seven-game winning streak in 2017, their most victories in a row since posting 11 straight wins to open the 2002 season.
  • DU has recorded 53 wins since 2011, at least eight more victories than any other NEC team. In addition, the Dukes' 30 conference wins in that time span are the most in the league.
  • Duquesne has registered at least seven total victories in three straight seasons and five of the last seven years.

SCOUTING HAWAII

  • The Rainbow Warriors (3-1) won three games in a row to begin the season over Colorado State, Navy and Rice, scoring at least 43 points in each of those victories.
  • Hawaii dropped a 28-21 decision on the road at Army last week, posting a season-low 362 yards of total offense. It also represented the first time the Rainbow Warriors trailed this season.
  • Quarterback Cole McDonald leads the country in passing yards (1,486) and passing touchdowns (15). Wide receiver John Ursua paces the nation in receiving yards (546), receiving touchdowns (7), and total touchdowns (8).
  • McDonald has thrown for at least 300 yards in each of the first four games of the season. He has not thrown an interception in 143 attempts this year.
  • The Rainbow Warriors have committed just two turnovers through the first four games of the season.
  • Saturday's game is homecoming for Hawaii.
  • The Rainbow Warriors were picked to finish fifth in the West Division of the Mountain West preseason poll. Hawaii has won 15 straight games over FCS teams.

Duquesne 31, Dayton 26

  • Nehari Crawford posted career-highs of 11 receptions for 223 yards with a pair of touchdowns as Duquesne held off a late Dayton comeback in a 31-26 victory over the Flyers.
  • Daniel Parr completed 21-of-27 pass attempts for a career-high 333 yards and three touchdowns for Duquesne.
  • Brett Zanotto finished with a career-high 10 tackles (nine solo) with a pair of tackles for loss. Leandro DeBrito added seven stops (six solo) in the triumph.
  • A.J. Hines rushed for a score while tight end Stew Allen caught his second touchdown pass of the season from Parr.
  • The Dukes defense forced the Flyers to convert on just three-of-six trips inside the red zone, while Duquesne was a perfect three-for-three on the day.
  • Crawford is the first DU player to tally 200 receiving yards in a game since Wayne Capers finished with 235 yards on nine catches with four touchdowns at Jacksonville on Oct. 1, 2016.
  • Crawford eclipsed the 2,000-yard receiving mark in the contest with 2,178 career receiving yards. He now has nine career 100-yard receiving games, as well.
  • Parr is the first Duquesne quarterback to record a 300-yard game since Dillon Buechel threw for 304 yards on Nov. 16, 2016. He topped his previous career-high of 281 yards set against Navy while at FAU last season. His 21 completions and three touchdown passes also represent career bests.
  • Mitch MacZura's 39-yard field goal represented a career long. He is now 3-of-3 on the season for the Dukes.


LOOKING AHEAD

Duquesne vs Bryant

  • After a bye week, Duquesne opens NEC play on Saturday, Oct. 6 hosting Bryant at 1 p.m. at Rooney Field. It will be the annual homecoming game for the Dukes.
  • Duquesne will look to avenge last season's 38-29 loss to the Bulldogs in Rhode Island in the final game of the year.
  • The Dukes earned a 35-31 victory over the Bulldogs in 2016 in the teams' last meeting at Rooney Field, but Bryant has won four of the last five games against Duquesne.
  • The Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the 2018 NEC Preseason Coaches Poll.
