PITTSBURGH - Duquesne defensive back
Spencer DeMedal (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington Area) and offensive lineman
Matt Fitzpatrick (Pennsauken, N.J./Bishop Eustace) earned Google Cloud Academic All-District® honors, the organization announced on Thursday.
The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Football Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
DeMedal and Fitzpatrick were named to the District 2 Team which encompasses schools from Pennsylvania along with Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
This marks Fitzpatrick's second-straight Academic All-District honor. The two-time All-NEC selection graduated in May with a 3.79 grade point average as a Finance major and is currently enrolled in Duquesne's graduate program in Biomedical Engineering. A three-year starter for the Dukes, he has helped DU pace the NEC in rushing offense in each of the last two seasons. This year, he has helped the Dukes rush for at least 150 yards in six contests.
DeMedal is just one of three sophomores in District 2 to garner the academic accolade. He has posted a 3.96 GPA in Biology and ranks second on the team with 54 tackles (39 solo) to go with a pair of fumble recoveries and two pass breakups this season. The safety had a career-high 11 tackles with 10 solo stops in a win over Robert Morris. He added nine tackles against FBS Massachusetts and Valparaiso, as well.
Both Fitzpatrick and DeMedal will now be included on the national Academic All-America ballot which will be voted on by the College Sports Information Director's of America, with the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team to be announced on Dec. 10.
The Dukes are slated to face off with Central Connecticut State in the regular season finale this Saturday, Nov. 17 at noon ET in New Britain, Conn.
