RICHMOND, Va. (Atlantic 10.com) - First Team All-Conference guard Deva'Nyar Workman scored 20 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as third-seeded Duquesne survived a back and forth battle with sixth-seeded Fordham, pulling out a 70-65 victory in the last quarterfinal of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship.
Workman was one of four Dukes in double figures, as Kadri-Ann Lass scored 16 points, Atlantic 10 Co-Player of The Year April Robinson added 14 while Amadea Szamosi contributed 10.
"That's March," said Duquesne head coach Dan Burt. "I expected nothing less from that game. "April and Dev willed us to victory, along with our starting five and everyone who played. The most important number now is one. Now it's all about facing Saint Louis tomorrow."
Duquesne (26-4) jumped out to an early 18-8 lead, and took a nine-point advantage into the locker room. Fordham (14-17) stormed into the second half, shooting 73 percent from the field in the third period, including five-of-seven from three-point range, to take a 51-50 lead after three periods. The Dukes responded with 50 percent shooting from the field in the fourth period, hitting all five of their free throws down the stretch.
"We stay focused. We're going to run into adversity, and our biggest mentality is to continue to push," Robinson said, discussing weathering the Rams' third period storm.
Second Team All-Conference forward Samantha Clark paced Fordham with a 20-point, 12-rebound performance. Freshman guard Lauren Holden play beyond her years adding 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Rams shot 45 percent on the night from beyond the arc.
"I think we gave Duquesne everything we possibly could. We put the effort on Sam's shoulders, and I couldn't be more proud of her," Fordham head coach Stephanie Gaitley explained. "We faced so much adversity this season, and to stay tough down the stretch speaks volumes of Sam and our team."
Duquesne advances to the Championship semifinals to face #2 Saint Louis on Saturday at 1:30pm at the Richmond Coliseum. The Billikens defeated the Dukes 84-81 in their regular season meeting on February 18th in St. Louis.
