RICHMOND - The Duquesne women's basketball team extended its road winning streak to nine games on Sunday afternoon after a 71-67 victory at VCU.
The Dukes improved to 19-2 overall and 7-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. VCU fell to 15-7, 4-5 A-10.
April Robinson led all scorers with 25 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Chassidy Omogrosso added 13 points and Kadri-Ann Lass 12.
VCU's Adaeze Aleaze scored a team-high 16 points. Isis Thorpe added 13 and Ashley Pegram 10 for the Rams.
The 1st quarter started out close with three ties and each team holding the lead twice. Aleaze's jumper tied the game at 8-8 heading into the media timeout. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Robinson and Omogrosso put the Dukes ahead 16-14 at the 1:51 mark. The teams would exchange jumpers before the quarter ended with Duquesne leading 18-16.
The game remained close in the 2nd quarter as there were four lead changes in the first five minutes with the Dukes leading 25-23 at the media timeout. The largest lead of the quarter was four points after an Jessica Ogunnorin layup made the score 31-27. Chadarryl Clay's 3-pointer with five seconds left send the game into halftime with the Rams leading 34-32.
For the first six minutes of the 3rd quarter, it remained a 1-possession contest. A 3-pointer by Galaisha Goodhope put VCU ahead 47-42 at 4:07. Duquesne would answer with an 11-3 run over the 90 seconds to take a 3-point lead at 53-50. The Dukes would extend the lead to five points as Omogrosso's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Duquesne a 58-53 lead.
An and-1 by Deva'Nyar Workman opened up the 4th quarter scoring and gave the Dukes their largest lead of the game at eight points, 61-53. The Rams came back by holding Duquesne scoreless heading into the media timeout and cutting the deficit to a basket at 63-61. Robinson would score four straight points to give Duquesne a 67-61 advantage at 2:26.
Thorpe's 3-pointer and a pair of Aleaze free throws got the Rams within two points at 67-65 with 1:10 remaining. After the team's both committed turnovers on their next possessions, Omogrosso was fouled with 28 seconds remaining. She made both free throws to extend the lead to four points. VCU's Keira Robinson made a layup with nine second remaining to make it a 1-possession game at 69-67. The Rams fouled Duquesne's Robinson off the inbounds pass, where she made both foul shots to seal the game.
The game finished with nine ties and 15 lead changes.
After outrebounding the Dukes 27-14 in the first half, the Dukes grabbed seven more rebounds in the 2nd half.
The Dukes return home to face Massachusetts (6-14, 0-8) on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
