PITTSBURGH - Amadea Szamosi and Chassidy Omogrosso combined for 35 points as the Duquesne women's basketball team won their program-best 14th straight game and 19th straight as home in their 55-40 victory over Fordham on Sunday afternoon. The game was broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network.
Szamosi scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and missed a double-double by one rebound. Omogrosso added 12 for Duquesne who is now 15-1 overall and 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Deva'Nyar Workman added nine rebounds off the bench and April Robinson recorded eight assists.
Fordham (6-10, 1-2 A-10) was led by Lauren Holden with 14 points. Samantha Clark grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Dukes scored the first 10 points of the game, seven of those were by Szamosi. Fordham would battle back, ending the 1st quarter on a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to four points.
Duquesne would regain a double-digit lead midway through the 2nd quarter on an Omogrosso 3-pointer that made the score 20-10. A pair of Szamosi free throws closed out the 1st half scoring with the Dukes ahead 29-16.
Fordham would get within eight points of tying the game on a Holden 3-pointer at the 6:52 mark of the 3rd quarter, but an 11-2 run for Duquesne gave them a 40-23 lead heading into the final quarter.
Emilie Gronas' 3-pointer early in the 4th quarter made the score 43-23 and gave the Dukes their largest lead of the game at 20 points. Duquesne would maintain a 20-point lead twice more - on a pair of Julijana Vojinovic foul shots at 7:57 and on a Szamosi layup at 5:43. Clark scored the final basket of the game with 24 seconds remaining.
The Dukes' defense held Fordham to 27 percent shooting from the field (17-63) and 14.3 percent from beyond-the-arc (3-21). Duquesne had 15 fast break points to Fordham's 0 and assisted on 16 of their 20 field goals.
Up next, the Dukes travel to Rhode Island (7-8, 1-2 A-10) on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Dukes and Rams split their regular season meetings and Duquesne defeated URI in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 Championship 66-53 in Richmond.
