LEWISBURG, PA - Duquesne scored on its first possession of the game and never looked back in defeating Bucknell, 26-7 for its first win in eight attempts in Lewisburg, Pa. Dillon Buechel threw short touchdown passes to three different receivers and Sam Martello made a career-high 15 tackles (10 solo) and a fumble recovery in the end zone.
The Dukes opened the game with a nine-play, 69-yard drive culminated with an eight yard touchdown fade pass in the back left corner of the end zone from Dillon Buechel to Wayne Capers to take a 6-0 lead.
After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless football, the Red and Blue struck again as Buechel found Chris King in the back left corner of the end zone again with 5:42 left in the half. The Austin Crimmins kick was good to give DU a 13-0 advantage. Freshman P.J. Fulmore, who led the Dukes in rushing last week, entered the game and had five rushes for 41 yards on the 14-play drive. He finished the game as Duquesne's top rusher again with 87 yards on 11 carries.
On the first drive of the second half, the Dukes forced a Bucknell three and out, then marched the ball up field once again and scored on a 41-yard Crimmins field goal to give the Red and Blue a 16-0 lead.
Bucknell then drove the length of the field before Duquesne's Abner Roberts forced a Bison fumble at the Duquesne one-yard line. Martello recovered in the end zone and the Dukes took over at its own 20.
The Red and Blue worked its way up the field again before Crimmins connected on a 28-yard field goal to extend its lead to 19-0. The field goal was set up by a Dave Thomas 29-yard reverse play which took the ball to the Bucknell one-yard line.
The fourth quarter opened with Buechel tossing his third touchdown pass of the day, this one a 4-yarder to Thomas with 13:23 remaining in the contest to take a 26-0 advantage.
On the next BU drive, the Bison found paydirt as quarterback R.J. Nitti scored from 17 yards out with 11:37 left to make it 26-7.
A late Bucknell scoring attempt was halted as Troy Gethers intercepted a deep pass at the Duquesne 31 and returned it 22 yards.
King was DU's leading receiver with eight catches for 88 yards and a score. Thomas followed with three grabs for 43 yards and a touchdown and Capers hauled in three receptions for 36 yards and a TD.
Buechel finished with numbers of 15 completions on 28 attempts for 172 yards and three touchdown tosses.
Klartel Claridy added nine rushes for 41 yards.
In addition to his forced fumble, Roberts had an interception and six tackles (4 solo) while Nathan Stone also had six tackles (3 solo), a sack of 11 yards and an additional tackle for a loss of two yards. Andy Struttmann also had a sack and Christian Kuntz picked off a pass.
The Dukes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 as they travel to Dayton for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
