The Duquesne women's tennis team played three matches over Spring Break in Florida last week. The Dukes faced off against Palm Beach Atlantic, who is ranked #32 in NCAA Division II. The match was played with D-II rules, which means that all three doubles matches were scored as individuals points. The team of Ally Miller and Maddy Adams won at the #3 spot 8-5.
This set the stage for an incredible singles showdown. After being down 2-1, the Dukes came back and took a 4-3 lead thanks to wins by Kylie Isaacs 6-1, 6-2 at #1, Adams 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 at #3 and Miller 6-3, 6-3 at #5 singles. Alexa Miller fought hard, but dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision at #2, but the match came down to the #4 and #6 spots.
Chandler Consonery dropped the first set 7-6 to PBA's Maja Jovic, but then won 6-3 in the second set. The third and final set went to Jovic with a 6-2 victory. The decisive match came down to #6 with Duquesne's Zuzanna Stelmaszak and Ana Reich of the Sailfish. They split the first two sets before Reich took the third set 7-6 which clinched the match for Palm Beach Atlantic 5-4.
The next match was at D-II Lynn University who is ranked #5. The Fighting Knights were 8-1 winners with the Dukes getting their point from Adams at #4 singles 6-1, 6-3.
The trip ended up at Florida Atlantic, where the Owls were 5-0 winners.
The Dukes (6-7) will host Wright State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Alpha Tennis and Fitness.
