Duquesne (4-2) posted 304 yards of first half offense in jumping to a 23-6 halftime lead and a 53-18 victory over visiting Alderson Broaddus (5-1) Saturday afternoon at Rooney Field for Homecoming. It was DU's fifth straight Homecoming victory.
Dillon Buechel threw for a career-best five touchdowns, marking the first time a DU quarterback has thrown for five scores since Sean Patterson in 2010. Three of those TD passes went to Chris King who equaled his career high in touchdown receptions. He scored on plays of 8, 33 and 21 yards. King finished the day with eight catches for 128 yards while Capers had five receptions for 92 yards.
Also hauling in scores were Wayne Capers from 65 yards out and Reggie McKnight from 18 yards. Finding paydirt on the ground was Rafiq Douglas with a 13 yard scamper. Douglas led all rushers with 86 yards on nine carries. The seventh and final Red and Blue score came on a 100-yard kickoff return by Nehari Crawford with 1:57 remaining in the game.
Alderson Broaddus opened the game's scoring on its first drive as Jordan Butler connected on a 40-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. The Dukes responded on their first drive as Buechel hit Capers on a 65 yard catch and run touchdown to make it 7-3 at the 10:33 mark. Jordan then hit an 18-yard field goal to narrow the Battlers' deficit to 7-6 with 4:51 ticking in the first.
Duquesne would go on to score the next 36 points through the second and third quarters, including all three of King's touchdown receptions before ABU's Wilson Vaughn connected with Darius Frederick on a 48-yard TD pass. Following an Austin Crimmins field goal for the Red and Blue with 2:23 left in the game, Alderson Broadus' Marcus Anderson returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score before Crawford reply with a 100 yard kickoff return of his own.
Austin Crimmins connected on field goals of 32 and 39 yards and added four extra points while Markus Colin hit the final point after touchdown of the day.
Defensively, Sam Martello and Abner Roberts led the way with six tackles apiece. Martello added two two tackles for a loss of 14 yards as the Dukes had eight TFL's on the day, including four sacks.
The Dukes return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 as they travel to Bryant for a 1:00 pm kickoff on NEC-TV and ESPN 3.
