Duquesne's lacrosse team improved to 6-1 on the season with a dramatic, 12-11 come-from-behind, overtime victory over Canisius Wednesday afternoon on Rooney Field.

In a game that never saw either team lead by more than two goals, the Dukes only led twice in the contest, 6-5 at the half and the ending 12-11 decision.

The teams alternated the first seven goals with Canisius scoring first and Duquesne answering three times before the Golden Griffins took a 5-3 lead with 8:20 left in the first half.

The Dukes then scored the final three goals of the first stanza to take a 6-5 lead into the intermission.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Griffs scored the first three goals to take an 8-6 advantage at the 25:59 mark before the squads alternated the next seven goals to make it an 11-10 Canisius lead with 9:26 remaining.

The Griffs strategically slowed down the play before a turnover led to a Duquesne opportunity. Caitlin Prince was fouled and was awarded a free position shot with 22 seconds remaining, but the shot went wide. This led to a wild series of events.

Canisius was credited with the ground ball, but Haley Marafioti forced a turnover with DU's Meredith Micho grabbing the ground ball with 16 seconds remaining. Coach Mike Scerbo then called a timeout with 14 ticks left.

A Canisius foul with nine seconds left led to an Amanda Kidder free position shot and goal with seven seconds remaining to send the contest into overtime.

In the first half of the overtime period Canisius gained control of the draw and maintained posession. A turnover however allowed the Red and Blue to position themselves for the last shot of the half period.

Clare Hurley was then fouled with one tick left on the clock, but her free position shot went wide. In the second half of the overtime, Hurley gained control of the draw control and the Dukes ran the clock down to the 56 second mark before calling a timeout.

Lowry then passed to Prince who scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left on the clock.

Marafioti led the Dukes with four goals, followed by Amanda Kidder with three and Clare Hurley with two. Lib Lowry had a season-high four assists. Sarah Klaben led the way with five ground balls, Hurley was tops with four draw controls and five different Dukes each had one caused turnover.

Jenna Bishop entered the game in goal six and a half minutes into the second half and earned her second collegiate win.

The Dukes return to action on Sunday, March 21st as they host Mount St. Mary's at 1:00pm on Rooney Field.
