Chavas Rawlins hauled in his first career touchdown pass and the Duquesne defense posted its first shutout since 2011 as the Dukes wrapped up the 2014 season with a 20-0 victory over visiting Robert Morris Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Rooney Field.
The Duquesne defense, which held the Colonials to just 26 yards rushing, was led by Sam Martello who had nine tackles (7 solo), including four for a loss of 18 yards. He also had a sack for 11 yards, an interception return for 47 yards and two quarterback hurries.
On the third play of the game, Martello picked off a Luke Brumbaugh pass and returned it 47 yards to the RMU four yard line. Two plays later, Michael LoPresti connected with Noel Oduho for the four-yard touchdown pass less than two minutes into the game.
The Dukes forced Robert Morris to punt on its next two possessions before starting a seven-play, 73-yard drive that ended in a 23-yard Austin Crimmins field goal, making it 10-0 with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Red and Blue opened the third quarter with an eight-play, 82 yard drive that was capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from LoPresti to Rawlins, making it 17-0 with 11:02 to go in the third.
Twenty-two seconds into the fourth quarter, Crimmins hit a 38-yard field goal to make it 20-0 with 12:38 left, then Martello registered the tackle of running back Erich Maine in the end zone with 9:08 to go, making it 22-0 to end the day's scoring.
Ryan Ho was the top Duquesne rusher with 59 yards on 11 carries. LoPresti was 10-18 for 133 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Dave Thomas led with three receptions while Devin Rahming had the most receiving yards with 35. Sam Martello shared the top tackling honors with nine stops (7 solo). Devin Williams picked off his second pass of the season, in the end zone, ending an RMU fourth quarter scoring threat.
The Dukes finished the season 6-6 overall and 2-4 in Northeast Conference play. Robert Morris wrapped up the season with a 1-10 record (1-5 NEC).
