NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Chandler Consonery its Rookie of the Week.
The freshman from Simpsonville, S.C. went 4-0 in the Dukes matches against #11 California, Pa. and Colgate. Consonery, along with partner Vanessa Steiner, won at #1 doubles, defeating the sixth-ranked double team in Division II Martina Rubesova and Franziska Steinhardt from CalU 9-8 on Friday. The following day, the duo were 8-1 winners over Colgate's Kelsey Wanhainen and Kelsey Shea.
In the #5 singles spot, she came from behind to pick up a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over CalU's Anastassiya Zherdeva and made fast work of Colgate's Merideth Rock 6-1, 6-0.
This is the first Rookie of the Week honor for the Dukes since Tara Majdalani won the award on Feb. 9, 2009.
The Dukes (2-2) return to the court on this weekend when they visit Philadelphia for three matches - Saint Joseph's on Friday, Temple on Saturday and Massachusetts on Sunday.
