Kona Named NEC co-Defensive Player of the Week

Sept. 27, 2010

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne sophomore linebacker Serge Kona (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) was named Northeast Conference Football co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Duquesne's NEC-opening 28-17 win over Albany on Saturday.

The 5-11, 223-pounder, who shares this week's award with Robert Morris safety Michael Landers, forced a pair of turnovers in posting a team high-tying seven tackles in DU's first win over Albany in four tries. Kona's first quarter forced fumble led to the game's opening touchdown. He added his first career interception in the second quarter. All seven of his stops, including one tackle for loss, limited Albany to a gain of three or fewer yards.

Duquesne held the Great Danes to 208 total yards in the wire-to-wire win.

Kona is the third DU player to earn NEC honors in four weeks, joining senior linebacker Nathan Totino who was the conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13 and sophomore quarterback Sean Patterson who was honored at Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7.

Duquesne, whose 3-1 start (1-0 NEC) is its best since 2006, returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 for a Homecoming conference match-up with Monmouth (0-3, 0-0) at 1:00 p.m.
