NEWARK, DEL. - No. 11/12 (Sports Network/AFCA) Delaware, playing without pre-season All-American starting quarterback Pat Devlin who was out with a fractured wrist, turned to the ground game to defeat Duquesne 30-6 at Delaware Stadium.

Leading the charge for the Blue Hens was Andrew Pierce who set a Delaware freshman record with 200 yards on 16 carries. Pierce scored on touchdown runs of one and 33 yards.

Duquesne, playing its first road game of the season, dropped to 2-1. Delaware moved to 3-0.

Delaware, with freshman quarterback Trevor Sasek making his first career start, finished with 373 of its 448 yards on the ground. The Blue Hens attempted just nine passes.

Duquesne, which finished with 326 total yards, drove inside the Delaware 15 three times, but came away with just three points against a UD defense that has yet to give up a touchdown this season.

Sean Patterson completed 20-of-39 passes for 186 yards and Connor Dixon set career highs for catches (8) and yards (117) for Duquesne. Larry McCoy carried 20 times for 88 yards for the Dukes.

Delaware got on the board on the game's opening series when Dixon tipped a pass into the arms of Tyrone Grant who returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

Duquesne took the ensuing kickoff 79 yards to the Delaware one before McCoy was stopped on fourth down.

The Dukes trailed 7-0 at the end of the first quarter despite outgaining the Blue Hens 109-27.

Pierce gained 39 yards on Delaware's first play of the second quarter to ignite a 59-yard drive that ended with a 32-yard Mike Perry field goal.

Eric Duale ended a 12-play drive with a career long 41-yard field goal to make it 10-3 with 6:10 to go in the half before Pierce took over, scoring on runs of one and 33 yards to give Delaware a 24-3 lead at the half.

The 5-11, 200-pound freshman owned the second quarter, rushing for 121 yards on seven carries.

Duquesne, which was 0-of-2 on first half red zone chances, drove to the Delaware 12 but Patterson, who was picked off three times, was intercepted on the final play of the first half.

Pierce fumbled on Delaware's first play of the second half with Duquesne's Khiry Carter recovering at the Blue Hen 37. The Dukes took it to the eight before settling for a 26-yard Duale field goal.

Phillip Thaxton caught a Sasek pass in the flat and took it 23 yards for a score to make it 30-6 at the end of three quarters.

Duquesne opens Northeast Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 25 at home against Albany (1-1). Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES
This was Duquesne's first game against a nationally ranked FCS team ... the crowd of 18,922 was the largest a DU team has played before since the resumption of the program in 1969 ... senior receiver Connor Dixon (South Park, Pa./South Park), set new career highs for catches (8) and yards (117) in notching the first 100-yard game of his career ... Dixon has 15 receptions in the past two weeks ... sophomore kicker Eric Duale (Hinckley, Ohio/Highland) kicked a pair of field goals (41, 26) ... the 41-yarder was a career long ... the Dukes were without starting receiver Akeem Moore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) who missed the game with an ankle injury ... Moore, who injured the ankle in last week's win over Dayton, has nine catches for 112 yards on the season ... senior linebacker Nathan Totino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) finished with a team-high eight tackles ... DU's team-leader in total tackles in each of the past two seasons, Totino has led the Dukes in stops in each of the first three games of 2010 (he had 13 vs. Bucknell and eight vs. Dayton).
