PITTSBURGH - Duquesne junior receiver Joe Cangilla (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District 2 football team announced today.
Cangilla, a Mathematics/Secondary Education Mathematics major with a 3.76 GPA, leads the Dukes (5-4, 3-3) with a 13.9 yards per catch average. Cangilla, who has played in all nine games with two starts, has eight catches for 111 yards and a touchdown this season. He also has seven tackles as a member of both the kickoff and punt coverage teams.
Cangilla's name, along with those from the other seven districts, will now move on to the national ballot. This year's ESPN Academic All-America team will be announced on Tuesday, November 23.
To be eligible for this award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America teams since 1952.
CoSIDA's District 2 covers Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
