PITTSBURGH - Duquesne took advantage of four Sacred Heart turnovers to end a two-game losing streak with a 37-17 win over Pioneers at Rooney Field.
The Dukes (4-3, 2-2) scored a pair of touchdowns off fumbles in a 21 second span of the first quarter to jump out to a 21-3 lead and never looked back as the DU defense held Sacred Heart (1-6, 0-5) to seven points - on a lone late fourth quarter touchdown - in the second half.
Larry McCoy, who entered the game as the nation's ninth-leading rusher, carried 24 times for 122 yards for the Dukes. Sean Patterson threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns and Eric Duale added a school record-tying three field goals for the second consecutive week for DU.
Duquesne took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards as Patterson completed 4-of-5 passes, the last of which was a four-yard touchdown to Marek Lapinski.
Sacred Heart answered with a 42-yard Jesper Fredriksson field goal before Duquesne's opportunistic special teams helped produce a pair of touchdowns in a 21-second span.
Thaimu Bangura put a jarring hit on Sacred Heart punter Robert Shepard who was scrambling to get off a kick after mishandling the snap from center. The ball popped loose and fellow defensive lineman Alex Inda scooped it up and rumbled 38 yards for a score to make it 14-3.
Aaron Fitzpatrick forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff with Joe Cangilla covering the loose ball. The Dukes struck quickly, with Patterson finding Dave Williams with a 49-yard touchdown pass on the next play to give DU a 21-3 lead after one quarter.
Duale tacked on a 27-yard field goal to make it 24-3 with just under 10 minutes left in the half.
Sacred Heart ended a run of 17 consecutive Duquesne points when Dale Fink found Garry Coles with a 49 yard touchdown pass at the 7:39 mark to pull the Pioneers within 14.
Duale added a 23-yard field goal with seven seconds left to make it 27-10 at the half.
McCoy capped a 60-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run on Duquesne's first possession of the third quarter.
SHU fumbled on its own 16 yard line on the first play of the fourth quarter leading to Duale's school record-tying third field goal of the game, this one from 26 yards.
Sacred Heart's Marcel Archer scored on a 34-yard run with 2:39 left to close out the scoring.
Garret Heron led the defense with nine tackles. Bangura had a pair of tackles for loss and Jared Williams added an interception for the Dukes.
