Lacrosse Holds Off Robert Morris 17-15

PITTSBURGH -Sarah Cates' second goal of the match broke a 12-12 tie and proved to be the game-winning goal as the Duquesne lacrosse team defeated Robert Morris 17-15 Tuesday night at Rooney Field.

Reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week Ashley Wood scored four times and added one assist while current A-10 Rookie of the Week Katie Rekart match Wood's totals, also with four goals and one assist. Meghan Frederick also recorded five points with a pair of goals and a team-high three assists. Sara Beckstead made nine saves as she earned her fourth victory of the season.

RMU's Emily Tomlinson scored a match-best seven points on five goals and two assists.

The victory was Duquesne's fourth in a row and evened their overall mark at 4-4 on the season. Robert Morris falls to 3-4.

DU wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Wood set up Cailin Colegrove just 13 seconds into the match. Tomlinson would answer 59 seconds later and add another at 26:03 to give RMU an early 2-1 advantage.

Goals by Rekart and Wood helped Duquesne recapture the lead at 3-2 at the 20:24 mark of the first half, but Tomlinson struck again 16 seconds later to tie the score at 3-3.

The Colonials' Courtney Sincinski and the Dukes' Shannon Hadaway exchanged goals before RMU scored five of the next six goals to take their largest lead of the game at 9-5.

Duquesne exploded for four consecutive goals in the half's last 1:48 to take a 9-9 tie into halftime.

Robert Morris struck first in the second half as Tomlinson set up Jenn Collins and added her fourth goal of the match to put the visitors up 12-10.

Rekart's third goal of the match got the Dukes within one goal at 11-10 with 26:24 left before RMU Kara Blakeley kept the Colonials up two goal 22 seconds later.

Over the 15 minutes, the Dukes would score seven times, include the eventual game-winner from Cates, to take a 17-13 lead.

RMU would score twice more, but ran out of times as the Dukes upped their record to 4-4 overall and remained perfect over their cross-rival, winning all three matches.

The Dukes will close out their two-game home stand on Sunday when they host Ohio State at Rooney Field. Match time is 1:00 p.m.
