Dukes Defeat Xavier 4-3

MONROEVILLE - The Duquesne women's tennis team came up with a huge victory over Atlantic 10 Conference rival Xavier Saturday afternoon, 4-3.

The Dukes started the afternoon out by taking the doubles point. Johanna Bezjak and Rachel McGowan were 8-1 winners at No. 1 doubles and Zena Williams and Rebecca Poole took No. 2 doubles 8-5. Andrea Sailer and Alexandra Albano lost a hard-fought set at No. 3 doubles 8-6.

DU jumped ahead early in the singles matches as Bezjak as a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles and Poole won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Xavier came back with wins at No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles.

Williams split the first two sets at No. 1 singles, but came back strong in the third set for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win that sealed the match for the Duquesne (8-4, 3-1).

Sailer fell at No. 5 singles in a hard battle 7-6, 7-5.

This was the final A-10 match of the 2007-08 season as DU will host West Virginia, Niagara, Pittsburgh and Akron to round out the regular season.

The 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship begins April 18 and runs through April 20.
