Duquesne women's tennis team finished the regular season with a 7-0 shutout of George Washington University on Saturday, April 14.
Junior Johanna Bezjak (Salisbury, MD/ James M. Bennett) started Duquesne's dominance over George Washington by defeating her no.1 singles opponent; the victory moved Bezjak's singles record to 11-6. Senior Jacqueline Hughes (McKeesport, PA/McKeesport) defeated her no.2 singles opponent 6-3, 6-2 and she achieved the team's best overall singles record at 14-3.
Freshman Rachel McGowan (Canfield, OH/Canfield) captured her fifth straight singles victory with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over George Washington at no.4 singles. Senior Alicia McNamara (North Augusta, SC/Eastern HS - Pendleton School), junior Andrea Sailer(Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic), and sophomore Rebecca Poole (Swindon, Wiltshire, UK/New College (Swindon)) also won their singles contests.
In doubles, no.1 doubles pair Hughes and Poole increased their overall doubles record to 13-3 with an 8-1 victory over George Washington. At no.2 doubles, Bezjak and McGowan continued their success with an 8-3 victory, moving their overall doubles record to a team best 14-1. Andrea Sailer and sophomore partner Alex Albano (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) also produced an 8-5 victory at no.3 doubles.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the Dukes spring season record is 12-5. The team's victory over George Washington marked their fifth straight victory.
This weekend the Red and Blue will participate in the Atlantic 10 Championship in Monroeville, PA., April 20-22. The sixth-seeded Dukes will face 11th seeded Fordham, Friday at 1:00 pm.
