PHILADELPHIA, PA - Hat tricks by Courtney Tamasitis and Sarah Cates and a six point performance by Kathleen McNish led Duquesne (7-6, 2-1) to a 10-8 victory over La Salle Sunday afternoon.
Cates and Tamasitis had the Red & Blue up 2-0 just 2:15 into the game. La Salle (4-7, 0-3) answered with three unanswered goals to take their only lead of the game 3-2 at 20:35. McNish's goal from Meghan Frederick tied the game at 3-3 with 14:37 remaining in the half. McNish assisted on three consecutive Duquesne goals from Meg Cloutman, Becky Greene and Tamasitis to give DU a 6-3 lead at the 3:37 mark of the first half. La Salle closed out the first half scoring with a pair of goals as the Dukes led at halftime 6-5.
Sarah Carson opened the second half scoring at the 3:43 mark to give Duquesne a 7-5 advantage. Cates' second goal of the game widened the Dukes lead to 8-5 at 20:34. The Explorers got within two goals after a Tiffani Grossi goal at 16:36. Cates and Tamasitis completed their hat tricks at the 13:59 and 10:34 marks respectively to put the game out of reach 10-6 with 10:34 to play. La Salle scored the final two goals of the game, but it was not enough as DU came away with the 10-8 win.
The Explorers outshot the Dukes 24-21 and had one less turnover 19-18 than the Dukes. Duquesne grabbed one more ground ball (21-20) and led in draw controls 13-8 over La Salle.
Nine saves by Caitlin Carducci was the game-high as she played the entire 60 minutes in net for the second consecutive game.
Duquesne's next home game is Friday afternoon against Atlantic 10 rival UMass. Dukes and Minutewomen begin at 4:00 p.m.
