COLUMBUS, Ohio - A 10-goal second half helped Ohio State overcome Duquesne's two-goal lead and gain a 13-8 win over the Dukes Wednesday afternoon at OSU's North Turf Field. The Buckeyes' Jessica Patane and Kelly Haggerty scored a game-high four goals each. Ashley Wood recorded three goals and Kathleen McNish added two scores for the Dukes (2-2).
OSU (2-0) opened the scoring with a Patane goal at 28:45. Duquesne countered at 26:42 with a McNish goal assisted by Sarah Carson. OSU's Natalie Miller made it 2-1 at the 24:28 mark. The Dukes tied the game at two with a Wood goal at 21:56 and took their first lead of the game (3-2) at 15:16 as a Wood connected on her second of the game. Ohio State tied the game at three with a Haggerty goal at 8:18. Sarah Cates gave the Red & Blue a 4-3 lead going into halftime.
Wood's third goal of the game, assisted by McNish, came less than a minute into the second half giving Duquesne a take a two-goal (5-3) lead. But, a pair of goals by Patane, at 28:06 and 23:25 tied the game at five.
Ohio State took a 6-5 lead with a Haggerty goal, 21:37, but the Dukes, on a Stacie Pollock goal, tied the game at six at 19:37. The Buckeyes regained the lead at 18:48 with a Keri Yourick goal. Patane scored her fourth goal of the game at 18:15 and a Miller goal at 14:36 gave the Buckeyes a 9-6 lead. The Dukes, with a McNish goal at 14:17, assisted by Janna Faulkner, got the Dukes within two goals at 9-7.
Ohio State sealed the game when the scored four goals over the next five minutes to take a 13-7 lead. Beginning with a Haggerty goal at 9:44, Slahor then scored at 7:34 to make the lead, 11-7. Haggerty added her fourth goal of the game at 6:11 and Amanda Shimp scored OSU's 13th goal of the game at 4:46. Duquesne ended the scoring with a Becky Green goal at 3:28 for the final 13-8 margin to Ohio State.
Ohio State's Kristen Gilwee had seven saves while giving up eight goals and playing the entire game. Caitlin Carducci took the loss for Duquesne, giving up 13 goals and making three saves in 60 minutes.
The Red & Blue travel to Davidson Sunday for a 1:00 pm start against the Wildcats.
