Wins by Duquesne's Distance Medlay Relay quartet, sophomore Emily Beahan (East Earl, Pa. / Garden Spot) and freshman Daniela Siciliano (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) led the Dukes to a fifth place finish at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Conference's Indoor Track & Field Championship Saturday at URI's Mackal Field House. The Dukes were just one-point shy of fourth place La Salle in the 12-team competition.
The Distance Medlay Relay team of juniors Samantha Howard (Moon Township, Pa. / Moon) and Amy Ruffolo (Bradford Woods, Pa. / North Allegheny) and sophomores Beahan and Ashley Earnest (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) completed the race in 12:10.00, over 15 seconds ahead of second-place Saint Louis.
Beahan also won the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:57:22 and Howard came in second in the 5,000 meter event, crossing the line in 17:30.79. Siciliano's leap of 10 feet, 10 inches gave her the pole vault crown.
Beahan (twice), Earnest, Howard, Ruffolo and Siciliano received A-10 All-Conference first team honors with Howard also placing on the All-Conference second team.
Charlotte finished 57 points in front of Richmond for the 49ers second straight A-10 title. Charlotte's Shareese Woods was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer for the second-straight year, while the 49ers' head coach Bob Olesen received Coach of the Year honors. Fordham's Kerstin Greene took home Most Outstanding Field Performer honors, while Richmond's Amy Van Alstine garnered Most Outstanding Rookie recognition.
The Dukes next compete at the ECAC Championships on Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4, 2007, at the non-affiliated Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, Mass.
