Kevin Rombach completed 23-41 passes and threw for three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as Duquesne dropped its season finale at Monmouth, 31-20. The Dukes ended the 2007 campaign at 6-4 while the Hawks finished at 4-6.
Both teams scored on its opening drives as Monmouth took the opening kick-off and capped off a 10-play, 79-yard drive with a six-yard scoring run by David Sinisi.
The Dukes responded on their first possession, marching up the field in 12 plays, covering 77 yards and culminating with a nine-yard pass from Rombach to Bruce Hocker to tie the score.
Sinisi found paydirt two more times in the half though as he scored on a second quarter 20-yard touchdown pass from John Nalbone and ran another one in from three yards out with 13 second remaining in the half.
Sandwiched between Sinisi's second quarter scores was a Duquesne touchdown pass from Rombach to Casey Quinn. The point after touchdown attempt was blocked though as the Red and Blue trailed 21-13 at the break.
Each team was three and out on their first possessions of the second half before Monmouth's Ken Amsel intercepted a Rombach first down aerial and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown and a 28-13 Hawks advantage after three quarters.
Monmouth kicker Fred Weingart connected on a 30-yard field goal with 7:41 remaining to extend the MU lead to 31-20 before Duquesne ended the game's scoring at the 1:16 mark with a Rombach 27-yard scoring strike to Michael Rasky.
Monmouth outgained the Dukes 344-310, including a 137-84 advantage on the ground. MU did not turn the ball over while the Dukes were picked off twice.
