Duquesne (7-12, 2-4) dropped a 77-60 decision at Dayton (10-16, 3-3) in an Atlantic 10 contest Sunday afternoon at UD Arena. The Flyers' three pointers was the nemesis of the Dukes as Dayton launched 11 treys in the contest. Loui Hall once again paced the Dukes netting 18 points followed by 13 point performances by Carmen Bruce and Jocelyn Chandler. Bruce led Duquesne with seven rebounds and a season-best eight assists. Dayton was led by Kiki Lund's 18 points - all from three pointers. Jennifer Strong chipped in 16 points in the Flyers victory.
Jocelyn Chandler opened the game's scoring before the host Flyers rattled off back-to-back threes to spark an 8-0 run for an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes of play. Duquesne got within a 10-9 reach as Hall connected on the traditional three-point play, but Dayton responded with a three pointer for a 13-9 lead with 13:55 on the clock. Chandler knotted the game at 13-13 with 13:14 ticking, but a 10-4 Flyer run put Dayton ahead 23-17 at the 10:31 mark. Dayton would out-score the Dukes 9-6 for a 32-23 edge with 4:17 on the clock. Dayton would take its largest lead, 13 points, on a three pointer by Lund with 1:13 remaining and would go on to lead 44-32 at the half.
Duquesne would be out-rebounded 23-15 by the Flyers in the first half. The Dukes missed the three-point prowess of Kristi Little who did not start due to illness as the Red & Blue were 0-6 from behind the arc in the first half. Little suffered an injury in her two minutes of action in the first frame, but was able to return in the second half.
After a UD three to open the second stanza, Duquesne hit five unanswered to get within a 47-37 edge before the Flyers upped their mark to 51-37 with 17:52 remaining. Hall would spark and collect six points in a 9-2 drive for the Dukes cutting the Flyer lead to seven for a 53-46 reach as 13:12 showed. The Dukes missed several opportunities in the paint and committed two fouls on the offensive glass which would allow Dayton to increase its lead back to double-digits holding a 61-48 lead with 8:07 on the clock. Sin unanswered would give UD their largest lead of the game at 67-49 before Rachel Clancy hit back-to-back threes, but the Dukes still trailed 67-55. The Dukes hit three of four free throws to bring it to a 10 point game (58-58) and would double team Dayton to force a called time out before forcing the turnover on the inbounds, but the Red & Blue could not get closer to a lead as they fell 77-60.
Dayton would hold a commanding 48-29 edge on the glass and out-shot Duquesne .444 (28-63) to .361 (22-61) from the field. UD was 11-23 (.478) from the three while Duquesne hit just 3-14 (.214) from behind the arc. Duquesne committed a season low eight turnovers while the Flyers recorded 15 turnovers resulting in 12 points for the Dukes.
Duquesne next travels to La Salle Friday, Feb. 2 for a 7:00 pm Atlantic 10 tip-off. The Dukes will return home on Sunday, Feb. 4, to host Fordham in a 2:00 pm tip.
Games Notes:
- The Dukes' starting point guard Kristi Little was suffering from illness and did not start, Gosia Flaga took her place in the line-up
- Flaga would leave the first half of the game with 3:42 to go after sustaining a knee injury getting blocked on a lay-up attempt, but would return in the second frame.
- Duquesne has hit at least one three pointer in the past 171 games.
- The Dukes committed a season low eight turnovers in the loss.
