Charlotte, North Carolina - Duquesne University's women's team finished in fifth place at this weekend's 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Center in Charlotte.
Sophomore Samantha Howard (Moon Twp., Pa. / Moon) set a new Duquesne record in the 1500 meter run, with a third place time of 4:36.94. Carrie Hucko had established the previous mark (4:37.20) on April 10, 2004.
Howard also had an ECAC qualifying run in the 5000 meter race at the Raleigh Relays; she finished fifth with a time of 17:28.50.
Sophomore Amy Ruffolo (Bradford Woods, Pa.) qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Ruffolo, who entered this event with the Atlantic 10 record, qualified with a time of 10:46.21. Charlotte's Tsehaye Dagnachew topped Howard's time Saturday and set a new A-10 best of 10:32.11
Duquesne's 4 x 800 meter relay team met the ECAC standards with a fourth place mark of 9:12.18. Senior Kristen Micsky's (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) high jump of 1.70 meters hit the ECAC standard on the nose,
First-year Atlantic 10 member Charlotte, which had won the league indoor title in February, took the outdoor crown by outdistancing runner-up Richmond, 210-112.
The 49er's Bob Olesen is the Atlantic 10 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. Rachel Papin of La Salle was named the A-10 Most Outstanding Track Performer with Beth Crocus from the Spiders getting the field award. The Most Outstanding Rookie Performer is Dayton's Amy Kremer.
It was an outstanding weekend for the Niners who also won the men's track and field title and the league's golf crown.
