Richmond, Virginia - Duquesne University's wonen's track & field team opened the 2006 outdoor season at the Virginia Commonwealth University Invitational this weekend, where more than 35 universities competed. The temperature was in the low 50s at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium.
The Dukes took first place in the 4 x 100 meters relay competition against six other teams. Senior Melissa Stewart (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton), who was ninth in both the hammer throw and shot put. won the discuss competition with a toss of 44.86 meters (147 feet, 2 inches).
Classmate Kristen Micsky (Greenville, Pa. / Reynolds) returned Duquesne to heptathlon competition, finishing fourth with 3,783 points.
Next Friday and Saturday, Mar. 24-25, 2006, Duquesne will head to North Carolina for N.C. State's Raleigh Relays.
