First year head coach Mike Scerbo opened his home season with a 13-6 victory over visiting Canisius Tuesday afternoon on Rooney Field. The win put the Dukes at 4-2 while the Golden Griffs fell to 2-2. Ashley Wood led Duquesne and tied the game lead with three goals while Alison Smith, Kelly Mulford, Courtney Tamasitis and Meg Cloutman each notched two scores. Tamasitis led the game with two assists. Keeper Meredith Norris recorded eight saves on 14 shots.
Canisius was led by Erica Nasca with three goals and Ashley Gray and Lauren Walsh posted one goal and one assist each. Rasheeda Brenton went the distance in goal and recorded 13 saves facing 26 shots.
Stacie Pollock started a three-goal scoring drive for the Dukes with an unassisted goal two minutes into action. Smith notched a free position goal with 13:48 ticking and Wood had an unassisted goal with 13:16 showing. Nasca put Canisius on the board with her unassisted goal with 12:34 on the clock before scoring again with 4:47 to go for a 4-2 reach. Cloutman gave Duquesne a 5-2 lead finding the back of the cage with 3:56 ticking that they would take into the break.
Kelly Mulford fed Smith the ball :34 into play of the second frame for a 6-2 lead before netting her own score - the game-winner - from Tamasitis :26 later. Caroline Gallagher put DU up 8-2 but Canisius scored with 27:37 and 24:21 ticking for an 8-4 reach. The Red & Blue would go on to out-score the Griffs 5-2 for the 13-6 victory.
Duquesne outshot Canisius 43-15 and won 12 draws to the Griffs' nine. Duquesne held a 38-26 advantage on ground balls.
The Dukes return to action this Saturday, Mar. 18, 2006 as they host Howard at 3:00 pm for Alumni Day.
