Duquesne (5-5) suffered a 77-42 non-conference loss at West Virginia (6-4) Friday night. Senior Carmen Bruce led the Dukes with 13 points and freshman Keri Pryor paced the game with seven rebounds. The game marked a homecoming for Morgantown's Pryor and Amanda Peck - both freshmen for the Dukes.
The Mountaineers were led by Sparkle Davis who got 19 of her game-best 21 points in the first frame. Lateefah Joye had a team-best six rebounds coming off the bench.
West Virginia held a 9-6 edge before rattling off a 10-0 run for a 19-6 margin with 13:17 remaining. A three by Carmen Bruce and basket by Jocelyn Chandler brought the Dukes to a 10-point reach followed by a three from Gosia Flaga and a jumper from Loui Hall for a 23-13 deficit with 9:21 ticking. The Mountaineers went on a 10-2 run to up their lead to 33-18 and they would end the frame out-scoring the Dukes 9-5 for a 42-23 lead at the break. WVU posted a 74-percent (17-23) accuracy from the field while DU hit 28-percent (8-29). Duquesne held a 16-13 rebounding advantage in the first half.
Duquesne could not get closer than 15 points of the Mountaineers in the second half with the last being 48-33 after a Hall basket with 15:16 on the clock. West Virginia used a 20-4 run afterward to up its lead to 68-37 with 6 5:55 on the clock. Flaga snapped a 5:03 scoring drought for the Dukes with a jumper at 5:31 but the host Mountaineers would go on to grab a 77-42 victory taking advantage of their speed and rebounding edge.
WVU out-shot the Dukes .577 (30-52) to .296 (16-54) and held a 39-24 rebounding advantage. West Virginia had 22 turnovers to DU's 21, but the Dukes couldn't convert the miss-cues getting just 14 points off turnovers to the Mountaineers' 26 markers.
The Dukes will take a break for finals and then return to the home hardwood hosting Princeton Dec. 22 in a 7:00 pm bout at the Palumbo Center.
