Knapp, Gardiner Earn MAAC Football Honors

Oct. 9, 2006

Duquesne sophomore quarterback Scott Knapp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry Traditional Academy) and freshman defensive end Mykol Gardiner (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine) were named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League co-Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week respectively for their performance in Duquesne's 20-17 win at Fordham on Saturday.

It is the fourth MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honor in six weeks for Knapp who completed a school record 35 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Dukes back from a 10-6 fourth-quarter deficit at Fordham. Knapp, who shares the award with Marist running back Adam Hansen, threw touchdown passes to Sean Bunevich at the 9:27 mark and Bruce Hocker with 3:09 left to give the Dukes a 20-10 lead.

Knapp, who has completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 1,813 yards and 16 touchdowns, ranks fourth in NCAA Division I-AA in total offense (297.83 ypg.) and eighth in passing efficiency (158.75). Duquesne leads I-AA in passing offense with an average of 302.2 yards per game.

Gardiner, who shared rookie honors on Sept. 11, finished with a team-high nine tackles (four solo), including 2.5 sacks for -14 yards.

Duquesne (4-2), who has won 37 consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League games, puts that streak on the line for the first time this season in the league opener at Saint Peter's on Saturday, Oct. 14.
