PITTSBURGH (AP) Iona blocked an extra point and intercepted three passes to set up all three of their scores to upset Duquesne 17-13 on Saturday.
Iona (3-5, 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) trailed early as Duquesne (6-3, 2-1) took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards on seven plays. Scott Knapp threw 10 yards to Bruce Hocker to put Duquesne up 7-0 less than three minutes into the game.
Iona answered with two Dane Samuels touchdowns, the first of which came late in the first quarter and was set up by Jonathan Saez's interception of a Knapp pass. Iona drove 36 yards on five plays, with Samuels scoring on a 7-yard run to make it 7-7.
Early in the second quarter, Herschel Rawls picked off another Knapp pass and returned it 8 yards to the Duquesne 13. Iona scored three plays later when Samuels caught a 5-yard pass from Dustin Croick to make it 14-7.
Duquesne had a chance to tie the game, when the Dukes drove 59 yards on six plays late in the first half and scored on Knapp's 29-yard pass to Hocker. But Mark Troyan's extra point was blocked and Iona still led, 14-13.
Much of the second half was played during or after a torrential rain and both teams struggled to move the ball.
When Iona finally scored it was, again, set up by a Knapp interception.
Andrew Lipski intercepted the pass at Duquesne's 43 and returned it 19 yards. Iona gained only seven yards on the next three plays and settled for a 35-yard field goal by Chris Lofrese with 2:26 left.
Duquesne drove to the Iona 20, but Knapp's final pass - his 55th of the day - fell incomplete to Hocker on a 4th-and-16 on the game's final play.
