New York, N.Y. -- Six turnovers proved too much to overcome, as Duquesne watched Columbia turn its mistakes into points in a 23-13 win over the Dukes at Lawrence A. Wein Stadium.
Craig Hormann threw a pair of second half touchdown passes to lead the Lions, who rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit for the win. Kicker John Rochell added field goals of 41, 46 and 22 yards for Columbia which upped its record to 2-0.
Scott Knapp, who finished the game 13-of-32 for 134 yards, struggled in his fourth career start as he was picked off four times. Duquesne, which dropped to 2-2, outgained Columbia 137-to-81 and enjoyed nearly a nine minute edge in time of possession in the first half, but had just a pair of Mark Troyan field goals to show for it.
The Dukes took advantage of a Columbia fumble on the first play from scrimmage to drive 57 yards on 14 plays before Troyan converted from 20 yards out to make the score 3-0. With under a minute left in the half, DU's Kyle Postell picked off a Joe Winters pass and returned it 46 yards to the Columbia eight. A penalty and sack pushed the Dukes 15 yards back before Troyan kicked a 40-yard field goal with 14 seconds on the clock.
Columbia, which finished with four turnovers, fumbled on the first play of the second half, but the Dukes couldn't capitalize.
Columbia took advantage of a 40-yard pass from Winters to Brandon Bowser followed by a 15-yard Duquesne penalty to get on the board on a 40-yard Rochell field goal with 6:32 left in the third quarter.
A pair of Duquesne turnovers then allowed Columbia to take the lead without gaining a yard from scrimmage.
With five minutes left in the third quarter, a Knapp pass intended for tight end Calvin Gitter was bobbled by Gitter and picked out of the air by Columbia's Adam Brekke, who returned the interception 35 yards to the Duquesne 17. Duquesne's defense pushed Columbia back 12 yards, forcing Rochell to tie the game on a 46-yard field goal. Then, with a minute left in the third quarter, Duquesne fumbled a punt at the Columbia five, but once again the defense answered by holding the Lions to zero yards on three plays before Rochell put Columbia up 9-6 with a 22-yard field goal.
On Duquesne's next possession, Tad Crawford stepped in front of a Knapp pass and returned it to the DU 39. Six plays later, Hormann hit Bowser on a fade pattern from 13 yard out to make the score 16-6.
Knapp then completed passes of 16 and 25 yards to Dan Spriggs and 28 yards to Alex Roberson on consecutive plays to set up a four-yard touchdown pass to Gitter to make it 16-13 with 9:22 left.
Columbia answered with a nine-play, 56 yard drive capped by a 10 yard pass from Hormann to Bowser to make the score 23-13 with just over five minutes remaining to end the scoring.
Duquesne held Columbia to 58 yards rushing on 43 attempts (1.3 ypc.) and enjoyed a 241-210 edge in total yards, but couldn't overcome its six turnovers. Jordan Davis led Columbia with 58 yards on 17 carries. Duquesne's Jeremy McCullough led all rushers with 95 yards on 27 attempts. Bowser caught four passes for 71 yards and two scores for Columbia. Spriggs led Duquesne with five catches for 71 yards.
Josh Antinopoulos and John Simmons led the Dukes with a game-high 11 tackles each. Antinopoulos, Harry Carter and Javonn Bradley each registered a sack for DU.
