Richmond, Va. - Duquesne University's women's lacrosse team once again put together a solid season with a 13-4 overall record and by tying Temple for the A-10 regular season title. But, once again, the Dukes are the league runnerup as host Richmond topped DU, 10-8, Saturday night at the Atlantic 10 Championship Finals at UR Stadium.
Richmond (9-7) beat #1 Temple Friday to gain a berth in the finals and then knocked off #2 Duquesne for the automatic spot in the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosee Championship Tournament.
Senior Ginger Flocco's four goals and four assists gave her a game-high eight points in the loss. Flocco broke the league's mark for points in a Championship by totaling 13 in the Dukes' two games.
Senior Laura App and sophomore Jennifer Lorenze join Flocco on the All-Tournament Team. Richmond junior Caroline McGuire led UR and was named the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship Most Outstanding Player.
Richmond came out strong, taking a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the contest with goals coming from three different players. The Dukes were held scoreless until freshman Ashley Wood and Flocco scored to put Duquesne within one, 3-2, with under 10 minutes left before the break.
Richmond rattled off two consecutive scores in a 20-second span to rebuild a three-goal advantage. Flocco's second goal and Ashley Friend's merker gave the Spiders a 6-3 lead at the break.
Flocco scored the first goal of the second period three minutes into the half. Three goals by the Spiders increased their lead to 9-4. Duquesne scored four of five goals in the final 10 minutes but this wasn't enough to overcome UR's lead.
