Defense dominates Red/Blue game

April 23, 2005

A veteran DU defense registered 10 sacks and picked off three passes in holding the offense scoreless in the annual Red/Blue game at Rooney Field on Saturday night. The game, played in a steady drizzle with the temperature dropping to a blustery 37 degrees by the final whistle, brought Spring practice to a close for the Dukes.

Senior captain Josh Antinopoulos, a two-time All-American, forced and recovered fumble and also was credited with a sack. Kyle Postell, Michael Hill and John Simmons finished with one interception each as the defense, which returns nine starters, was credited with a 59-13 win.

The game was played using a point system that awarded various plays both on offense and defense. Thirty-five of the defense's points came on sacks (2 points each) and interceptions (5 points each).

The closest the offense came to scoring was on a 41-yard first half field goal attempt by Matt Worgul that sailed wide left.

Sophomore Brad Wagner completed 9-of-18 passes for 128 yards to pace the offense. He hit Steve Mougis with a 33-yard pass in the second half for the offense's biggest play of the evening. Wagner also found redshirt freshman Conrad Carter for a 22-yard gain in the first half. Carter led all receivers with six catches for 67 yards. The offense's points came as the result of first downs (11) and the two 20-yard plays (1 point each).

Junior Jeremy McCullough led all rushers with 27 yards on eight attempts. Junior James Jacobs carried four times for seven yards.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Scott Knapp finished the game 7-of-15 for 32 yards and junior Ben Palumbo, who had three passes dropped, went 1-of-6 for nine yards. Wagner, Knapp and Palumbo each threw one interception.
